Prof. Banaszak Holl has been a member of the Chemistry Department at the University of Michigan since 1995. The research program is focused in the areas of biological materials, nanotechnology for drug and gene delivery, and organometallic chemistry. A diverse and dynamic group of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows come from a wide variety of backgrounds including graduate programs in Applied Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Macromolecular Science and Engineering, Physics, and the Program in Biomedical Sciences. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the research projects, the differing perspectives of the various scientific and engineering disciplines are critical to our approach to discovery and innovation.

The Banaszak Holl group is a founding member of the Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences (MNIMBS). We share interdisciplinary, collaborative research space in the Chemistry Department, Medical School, and Physics Department and work in teams on projects in translational Nanomedicine. Weekly research meetings include all members of our teams from the newest undergraduate to the physician who has just finished seeing patients. In collaboration with Prof. Orr of Physics, we run the MNIMBS Scanning Probe Microscopy Lab. Current projects included dendrimer-based targeted drug and imaging agent delivery, the mechanisms of multivalency in biology, the mechanism of gene delivery and expression, and studying the nanoscale structure of Type I collagen.
